Michael Dwayne Vick (born June 26, 1980) was a National Football League (NFL) quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons from 2001 through 2006. He is currently under suspension from play from his Atlanta Falcons team contract and partial home confinement from a federal pre-sentence probation violation, and is not likely to return to play. Notable for his 2001 NFL Draft pick from Virginia Tech, league records, and lucrative endorsements, his ban from the Falcons team in 2007 was due to involvement with illegal dogfighting and gambling activities and garnered him notoriety outside professional sports. A subsequent indictment, guilty plea and subsequent federal felony conviction have also brought renewed national attention to pitbull dog fighting and controversy over relevance of animal cruelty laws to society and their purposes in relation to potential violent criminals.

Vick's NFL suspension in August 2007 was imposed in response to his guilty plea to federal felony charges resulting from discovery of an unlawful interstate dog fighting ring which resulted in conviction. Vick is currently out on bond, pending sentencing in December. On September 26, he was found in probationary violation by federal authorities due to marijuana use based upon a September 13 test, and ordered to home confinement. Vick was indicted by a Virginia grand jury in Surry County on September 25 for 2 additional felony counts under state laws of animal beating/killing and dog fighting charges, for which convictions provide a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Most of his product endorsement relationships had been suspended or terminated by August 2007. In the weeks that followed, three banks filed multi-million dollar law suits to recover loans for investment purposes which each of the banks claimed to be in default of their terms. The Falcons have sought to reclaim bonus money paid Vick, and on October 10, an arbitrator ruled that the team is entitled to recoup $19.9 million from him.
